Sunday May 18, 2008 - Evening

By Central Center

I want to thank Gary and Brbara for stopping by over lunch and providing us with some bluegrass entertainment and Figarros' for providing pizza for our lunch.

Spent most of the day visiting with city council members learning about what is going on in the community to a greater extent.  I can't believe how much I have learned through this experience, it has really open my eyes to mental health issues in outr community.

Just an update so far we have brought in nearly $3,000.00 in contributions.  That is a great start on reaching our goal of $20,000.00, thank you all for showing your support.

Last night was a hoot!  After I had had most of my visitors, the wind started to pipck up around 5 or so and lasted a few hours. However, before it died down it blew my tent off the roof,  no worries though I got it back up after the wind died a little.  Later I was able to watch all the High School students come and go for their prom,  they all looked so nice dressed up in their formal gowns and tuxedos, I hope they enjoyed their evening.

Today is another bright and sunny day, so far.  I had a good night last night with a little rain and the traffic noise on hwy 65 to keep me company.

After a great roasted chicken dinner and an egg and bacon breakfeast I am ready for the new day to begin.   There has been a steady steam of visotrs stopping by and showing their support.   Many include principals and vice-principals from the surrounding schools.

Please remember to sign the guest book and add your own comments.  Thank You ALL

Friday May 16, Day 1

By Central Center

Today is the first day of my weekend on top of the Old Spring Lake Park District Center Building on the SLP HS grounds.  The promotions and banners are up (take a look at the pictures) and the suport for raising awareness for mental health and Central Center for Family Resources is growing.  I'm ready to start my weekend, I have my tent all setup, a lounge chair to relax in and plenty of supporters to cheer me on.

I was getting a little worried at the beginning of the week on the account that the weather reports were calling for rain, but the current weather of 73 degrees and sunshine with a slight breeze couldn't be better.  I look forward to seeing everyone who stops by to show their supoprt.  I am fortunate enough to have some entertainment this evening as I get to have a birds eye view of the high school baseball game, GO SLP.

The Spring Lake Park/Blaine fire department has already stopped by to show their support and offered me a lift in the process, Thank You. I understand that Biff's Bar and Grill will be providing me with dinner tonight,  I can't wait. Channel 5 has been out early this afternoon talking to me about what I am doing and hwy, they have agreed to air a bit on this evenings news, so if you get a chance check out Channel 5 news.

It appears that we are going to have numerous individuals showing support by joining me on the roof over the weekend.  I already have a few of my fellow mayors that have agreed to make an appearance, press agreeing to cover the RoofRaiser

I want to thank all the local companies that have shown us support in making our RoofRaiser happen.

Central Center RoofRaiser

By Central Center

Local mayor takes fund raising efforts

to new heights for mental health center

Mayor Bob Nelson of Spring Lake Park was sympathetic when he read the fund-raising letter from Central Center for Family Resources (CCFFR).  The 501 ©(3) charitable group provides mental health treatment for kids and families coping with emotional and behavioral issues.  Reduced funding had forced cutbacks in their services.  However, Spring Lake Park had to give the charity the same answer every other city gave them:  We’ve had cutbacks too, and have no money to spare.

But Mayor Nelson did offer an idea.  He had heard about how Sheldon Anderson, mayor of Wyoming, Minnesota, had raised money for a teen center by going up on its roof and staying there until the goal was reached.  To help CCFFR, Nelson offered to spend time on the roof of the SLP School District Office at 8000 Highway 65 (adjacent to Spring Lake Park High School).

Because of work commitments, he can’t promise to stay up there until a certain amount is pledged.  However, he will climb onto the roof at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, and stay up there until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, May 19.  Dubbed the “RoofRaiser” the effort’s goal is to raise at least $20,000 for CCFFR.

While camping on the roof, Mayor Nelson will be busy using his phone and computer to contact businesses and individuals asking for their contributions.  He is inviting officials from other cities as sports and media people to join him for parts of the weekend.  Since May is National Mental Health Month, local mental health professionals will also take part.  The rooftop is very visible from Highway 65 so that passing motorists can wave and honk their support.

Those who wish to help the RoofRaiser reach its goal can visit www.ccffr.orgOpen in a new window to make a pledge or credit card donation, or send a check or money order (made out to CCFFR) to Patty Halvorson, Central Center for Family Resources, 1485 81st Ave. NE, Spring Lake Park, MN  55432.  Contributions may also be dropped off in canisters at the CCFFR office, the Spring Lake Park School District (1415 81st Avenue NE), or the City of Spring Lake Park offices (1301 81st Ave. NE).  From May 16th to 19th, donations may be dropped off at the RoofRaiser site (8000 Highway 65).

Central Center for Family Resources was established in 1979.  It is considered to be the primary provider of children and family counseling services in the Anoka County area.  In 2007, CCFFR assisted more than 3,000 families, regardless of their ability to pay, in addressing behavioral and emotional issues.  To learn more about CCFFR programs, visit www.CCFFR.orgOpen in a new window.
